September Newsletter 2024

Ottawa County Republicans' Newsletter

September 20, 2024  1:3

Editor's Preamble:

Thank you for taking a moment of your time to see what is going on in the Ottawa County Republican Party.

Admittedly there are some disturbing things going on in our Public schools. Make sure to scroll down to the culture section of this Newsletter to see cultural problems we are dealing with and why your questions to local candidates must be unrelenting in the area of what specifically they are going to do about these problems impacting our communities' children.

Let's face it: politics can be an unfortunate season because many candidates and media tend to focus on sniping at one another instead of on issues.

We have real ISSUES here in Ottawa County, and while there is NO question that Republicans are united behind President Trump, there is a lot of grey muddiness in the local contested races. Nonetheless, we encourage you to do the research that is required to vet these candidates. We don't just have Democrats running against Republicans. There are write-in campaigns, as well as two conservatives running in a contested race for District 4 Commissioner.

Invest your vote with value. Do research and make an educated decision. Turn around the flowing river of information that is coming to you by taking control of the information you choose to consume.

Thank you for your time in reading through our Newsletter,  Republicans! We will begin with County Election/Voting Information and then move straight into the Party news.

The OCRP Holds Several Trump Force 47 Events...

At a time like this, when the 45th President has experienced as many assassination attempts as Kamala Harris has done  interviews with the Press, it is easy to feel a little discouraged about the framework of politics in our country. The only thing we can do is what WE CAN do. Trump Force is teaching the citizenry how to target low-propensity voters and how to make this election "too big to rig." We may hold another Trump Force Event in the next week or so, so keep your eyes on our calendar and social media.

National Culture with Local Opinion

It Was Shocking Enough When Bud Light Sank to America's Second Favorite Beer; Now dropped to Third...

AND... if that isn't enough, Now see This⬇️

Given these two pieces and the conclusion their combined meaning puts forward, we have some thoughts regarding our local situation with the BOC, which will be seated in 2025.

Opinion

The Western Journal is using the word, "Flee." "Flee" means to run away as fast as one can. It does not mean a casual, subtle exit that no one observes. In fact, Merriam Webster's Dictionary says "flee" means, "to runaway from danger or evil," and "to hurry toward a place of security."

Given the fact that Corporate America is FLEEING from DEI and wokeism makes the promises by certain local, current candidates even more puzzling. The Ottawa voters have been promised that if the majority on the BOC flips to a non-conservative majority, a new Board will vote to reinstall DEI.  Why have some candidates promised to reinstall a policy the entire country is fleeing from? Our answer?

Simply because they can.

Republican voters need to ask themselves a hard question: do you still want YOUR tax dollars to pay for a DEI Department at the County level?

Does DEI make economical sense? No. Do laws already exist to protect County workers from discrimination? Yes. Clearly... as we've seen through Adeline Hambley and former administrator John Gibbs' settlements the laws work. (These settlements happened anyway, in spite of the DEI office being closed because they relied on standing employment laws.) *Please ask yourself why it is that Ottawa County candidates would want to reinstall *DEI when the entire Country now knows it is a losing proposition and is now cancelling their own DEI Departments. It's a Fair Question.

Candidates Against Reinstalling DEI

Option for District 9: Write in Roger Belknap

Option for District 1: Write In Gretchen Cosby

Option for District 4: Independent Rob Thurkettle

"Something Wonderful Is Happening in the Republican Party..."

Although this piece focuses on a National situation, we see the SAME  situation happening locally as it is currently unfolding here in Ottawa County. Something wonderful is happening in the Republican Party!

Volunteer Highlight

Precinct Delegate and Candidate for District 3 County Commissioner, Orlando Estrada

Orlando Estrada

What do you love most about Ottawa county?

It's not only beautiful, but we also have the Lakeshore beaches and excellent parks. I also appreciate that Ottawa has a lot of services available to the Public. As someone who has  traveled the nation for nine years, I see a difference in how Ottawa County is managed and appreciate this in comparison to other Counties across America.

Tell us a little bit about where you grew up in Ottawa?

I was born and raised in the city of Holland. I graduated from Holland High School. I live in Holland Historical District/Tulip Lane where all the tulips are on the boulevard and enjoyed participating in the Tulip Time Parade when I attended Washington Elementary School. I’ve also participated in non-profits in Holland Public Schools and business. Holland is my home.

What are some of the tasks and volunteer opportunities you take advantage of in serving the Ottawa County Republican Party?

I hand out literature for Republican causes and door-knock for candidates. I make it a point to talk to everyone in the community about valuable conservative-leaning issues. I make suggestions of how to improve the Party online and offline. I’m passionate about the Life issue and spend as much time as I can helping educate citizens about this important issue. I’ve also done extensive work through the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America which is an organization that goes door-to-door to educate people on the dangers of abortion to women while advocating for the choice of Life.

Why are you running for Commissioner of District 3?

I am running for Commissioner of District 3 because I care about people and I believe there are other underserved communities in D3. This isn’t my first time running and there are still some issues that I feel have gone unaddressed that need to be embraced by the current board.

There are two issues in particular:

1. Public Safety Transparency/Body Cameras: To prevent both the officer and civilian of being falsely accused and preventing unnecessary costs for both sides in our judicial system and to ensure they are properly installed. And also, although our Safety Department in OC has purchased these cameras, they will not be in the Department until well-after the beginning of 2025. I want to be part of voting for the important policy for how long data from these cameras will be stored, or where it is going to be stored. I believe my presence on the Board will lend itself strongly to this issue and accountability on this issue.

2. Pro-creation—incentivizing people to live and work here in Ottawa County and primarily to encourage young mothers to keep their babies and to stay and live Ottawa County. This could work through a voucher system for formula and diapers as well as programs that allow women to feel there is a community of support around them—We can encourage women to keep their babies if we build in a community of support. Republicans can be “pro-life” all they want, yet change doesn’t happen without actions to support women with unexpected pregnancies.

Stephanie Lelo's Roasted Salsa

Roasted Salsa/Lelo

This time of year, tomatoes are plentiful and inexpensive at most markets and grocery stores. Whether you're brimming in your own homegrown tomatoes, or need to purchase some tomatoes to make this recipe, we encourage you to try it!  *You can make the full recipe for canning, or use the smaller recipe for a smaller batch.

Roasted Salsa (Small recipe, not for canning)

Ingredients

  • 8 to 12 roma (plum) tomatoes (approx. 2 lbs.)
  • 3-4 anaheim peppers
  • 1-2 jalapeno peppers (1 for less heat)
  • (weight of the combined Anaheim and jalapeno peppers should be approx. 1/2 lb.)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried Mexican oregano (or regular oregano)
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 2 t. ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar (may reduce or omit for less tartness, or substitute additional lime juice)
  • crushed red pepper flakes, optional (1/2 to 1 teaspoon to taste for a hotter salsa)

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Core and cut tomatoes in half. On large baking sheet, place tomatoes cut side down, peppers, quartered onion, & garlic cloves. Roast in preheated oven 30 min., removing garlic after 15 min. Skin of tomatoes and peppers should be blistered and partially blackened. Cover pan for 10 minutes; steam will make peeling skin easier. Remove tomato skins. Wearing plastic gloves, remove skin, seeds and stems from peppers (or leave seeds if you want hotter salsa). Place all ingredients in food processor and chop to desired consistency. If any juices remain in roasting pan, add those, too. Add crushed red pepper flakes if more heat is desired. Put salsa in fridge for at least 4 hours; best if made the day before. Will keep for up to 2 weeks in fridge when full amount of vinegar is used. May be frozen.
