Bev Horinga of Blendon Township: *Your Voice and WHY it Matters

Opinion-2 minute read
What Happened in Lowell Township on January 12, 2026 and *Why* Blendon Township Should Take Note
-by Bev Horinga, of Blendon Township, Ottawa County

Lowell residents just showed Michigan what real civic engagement looks like.

Residents turned out in such overwhelming numbers on January 12th, that the township hall could not safely accommodate the crowd. The room was filled beyond capacity. Fire and safety limits mattered. And because of that the meeting was canceled.

Not postponed for lack of interest....
Not dismissed because people stayed home....
It was canceled because too many people showed up!

That is Power!

This wasn’t chaos — it was community. Families. Neighbors. Farmers. Property owners. Ordinary residents exercising an extraordinary level of participation. When local government decisions affect land, safety, taxes, and the future of a community, people showed up shoulder-to-shoulder to make sure their voices could not be ignored.

The Message Was Unmistakable

*Decisions will not be made quietly
*Residents expect transparency and accountability
*Local voices still matter when they are united

--No speeches were needed.
--No signs were required.
--The presence alone spoke louder than any microphone.

Why This Matters for Blendon Township

This is exactly the moment Blendon Township residents are facing.

When controversial, high-impact decisions are on the table — whether zoning changes, variances, or industrial projects — attendance is influence. A full room changes the tone. An overflowing hall changes the outcome.

--Officials can ignore emails.
--They can minimize public comments.
--However, they cannot ignore a packed room.

The Takeaway

Lowell Township proved something important:

Local control doesn’t disappear overnight — it only disappears when the people stop showing up.

Blendon Township residents have the same power.
The same right.
And the same opportunity.

Fill the hall.
Stand shoulder-to-shoulder.
Make it impossible to proceed without the people who live there.
